On Tuesday, April 1, 2003, the American Junior Program sent us with Herr Doerr on an "Ausflug ins Blau" (an excursion into the wild blue yonder, so to speak).  Though for days we tried to get them to tell us where we were off to, it was kept a big secret.  In the end, we wound up in... Speyer.  There's not really much in Speyer.  There is a tower, and yes, more churches.  But so that none of my trip would go undocumented, I resolved to allot Speyer its own page of pictures in spite of its relative boring tendencies.

You know, I guess Speyer isn't really all THAT bad.  It's no tourist city though, that's for sure.

Yeah, ok, that fact IS pretty cool
The Speyer Dom, built in 1030 AD, was the largest building in the world for hundreds of years.

One of many many things that got blown up
The side of the Dom. It's REALLY big. Notice the bottom section is original, the top was rebuilt

THIS was built 1030? impressive indeed.
The inside of the Dom, nearly entirely original

4 churches in such a small city is just wrong.

Mount of Olives = der Oelberg
A cool sculpture of Jesus praying at the Mount of Olives while Judas (barely visible on left) points

Seems like a random place for such a memorial...
A memorial for Dr. Edith Stein, a Jewish woman martyred in the Holocaust

Ew, gross.
One room in the Dom contained, I kid you not, remains of saints. Greg and Matej check out a bone

Next to the women's cleansing pool. :)
